The Vowels

Vowels are forces of rest, heart forces. Where there is restlessness and chaos, they order, form, point to the essential. Actually, they have no external movement. Their principle is radiation, the presence, the role model. They act as invisible magnetic fields that structure the space and even give support when the exterior is removed.

The calming sequence D F G K H - R

In this course, we will show you the eurythmic gestures for the consonants D-F-G-K-H and R. Lory Maier-Smits explains how Rudolf Steiner taught them:

  • If you will later be dealing with children or adults who are excited, restless and nervous, then this sequence of sounds D F G K H can have a calming and relaxing effect.
  • He then spoke about how to gain a real experience of the consonants. One should really experience them intensively outdoors in nature, which he had repeatedly mentioned and described that day.

We will take this up and practise it with you. You will learn the relationships between the consonants and between the consonants and the vowels. Their connections to the zodiac system and the planets. And you will learn how to find them in nature.

The Path of the Consonants

The microcosm, our body, and the macrocosm, the universe, are mirror images of each other. This is why the Babylonians and Egyptians were able to develop a zodiac that is structured according to the same laws as the human organism. In traditional Western medicine, these relationships were translated into a medical system and spread throughout Central Europe by Paracelsus and others.

The astrological approach to medicine is also valid in the field of movement and can be applied in body therapy. According to this view, the human being is a two-, three-, four-, seven- and twelve-membered being whose levels interact in many different ways. These relationships also play an important role in understanding eurythmic consonant gestures and their relationship to each other, to the vowels, to the zodiac system and to the planets.

A sound-sequence of twelve consonants, in which the whole human being is expressed. We can therefore speak of the  sound-sequence of the human being, of a contemporary alphabet, of a qualitative gradation of sounds, of a path of development of four times three sounds.

Intervals and Soul Gestures

In soul gestures, the musical sensation of entering into one's own creative process is turned back upon itself and internalised. The body is "be-toned". The relationship between the musical movement and the soul gesture is comparable to that between sound and bell. Only the sound comes first.

Language is a reaching out into the world, into the soul awakening to the world, a reaching out to the senses, an encounter with the world. Music is an inner awakening and becoming active in this process: an entering into the reaching out. And thus encountering one's own spirit, one's own creative activity.

The Musical Hallelujah

The musical Hallelujah developed in this course is an interpretation of statements made by Rudolf Steiner in his lecture cycle "The Initiate's Consciousness".

His explanation begins with: "Music is capable of presenting the Christ impulse to the world in tones, in shaped tones, in soulful, spiritualised tones."

This is followed by a description of a path from the third to the fifth to the seventh in major, followed by a path back to the third in minor, from which it then sounds out again in major.

He ends with the words: "Then, within the shaping of the tones, the human being will conjure up something immediately supersensible in this formation of tones, presenting it to the musical sensibility. The Christ impulse can be found in music."

This path will be examined in more detail in this course.

The Planetary Gestures of Eurythmy

The planetary gestures in the order of the days of the week: Saturn (Saturday) - Sun (Sunday) - Moon (Monday) - Mars (Tuesday) - Mercury (Wednesday) - Jupiter (Thursday) - Venus (Friday). As if carried on wings, the gestures are embedded in the musical-eurythmical experience of the intervals.

The Venus gesture connects you with the forces of the earth. In a balance between giving and taking, she nourishes a center full of life. The order and the diversity of their light forces enrich the life processes in your organism. This gives you the strength to shape your outer life in a variety of ways.

The System of Wings

In the depiction of the cherub of San Marco, Venice, are described three pairs of wings. These wings can be experienced in our movement.

  • The back wing, spread sideways in the picture, connects to our shoulder blades.
  • The front wing, which is shown closed and pointing downwards, has its anchor point in the collarbones.
  • The upward-pointing wing is connected to the trapezius or hood muscle, which pulls from the occiput to the outer collarbone. Its association with a muscle is an expression of its relationship to our metabolism and will system.

Vowels in Action

The vowels are related to the forces we associate with the planets and thus with the days of the week. Practising the exercises on the corresponding days supports your inner connection to these forces. It is almost impossible to be healthier!

For each vowel, we teach you three sequences of 10 to 15 minutes each with different requirements and effects. So that you can practise for longer, we have combined the individual sequences into two medium-length sequences and one mammoth sequence. This allows you to practise as you please and soon enjoy the beneficial effects.

In this course, you will learn twelve exercises to strengthen the rhythmic system and develop the etheric heart. The movements are simple and even beginners can learn them quickly. They connect the head, heart and limbs and promote calmness, warmth, breathing power, resilience and joie de vivre.

The course offers a thorough introduction to the exercises, how to perform them and the medical context. You will receive everything you need to apply the exercises for yourself. At the same time, you will develop the ability to select suitable exercises for others, practise with them and mindfully accompany them in their process.

The videos show the exercises, practise them and explore them in depth from many different perspectives. The course is supplemented by a 100-page course dossier with detailed instructions and background information.
